Law school to host national pro bono specialist
Barash is former Bowater exec who directs American Bar Association program

NOV. 11, 2005 - An American Bar Association (ABA) expert on international and pro bono law will speak twice next week to students at the Charleston School of Law.

Tony Barash, the director of the ABA's Center for Pro Bono, will discuss the need for pro bono legal services on Monday afternoon. The following day, he'll discuss democracy and law in developing nations. More details are below. All area lawyers are welcome and encouraged to attend.

"Tony Barash has a national and international reputation for his expertise in working with law schools to develop pro bono programs and international legal systems," said Professor John Simpkins of the Charleston School of Law. "We're quite fortunate to have two chances to hear from him."

Barash, the former general counsel and senior vice president for corporate affairs for Bowater, Inc., in Greenville, was with an ABA program in Uzbekistan to develop the country's legal and judicial systems prior to his current role as director of the Center for Pro Bono. He has served on the Board of Trustees of Pitzer College, Claremont, California; the Peace Center for the Performing Arts, Greenville, South Carolina; the Urban League of the Upstate (South Carolina); and the University of Chicago Law School. He received his B.A., cum laude, from Harvard College and his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School.
