NOV. 11, 2005 - An American Bar Association (ABA) expert on international
and pro bono law will speak twice next week to students at the
Charleston School of Law.
Tony Barash, the director of the ABA's Center for Pro Bono, will
discuss the need for pro bono legal services on Monday afternoon.
The following day, he'll discuss democracy and law in developing
nations. More details are below. All area lawyers are welcome
and encouraged to attend.
"Tony Barash has a national and international reputation
for his expertise in working with law schools to develop pro bono
programs and international legal systems," said Professor
John Simpkins of the Charleston School of Law. "We're quite
fortunate to have two chances to hear from him."
Barash, the former general counsel and senior vice president
for corporate affairs for Bowater, Inc., in Greenville, was with
an ABA program in Uzbekistan to develop the country's legal and
judicial systems prior to his current role as director of the
Center for Pro Bono. He has served on the Board of Trustees of
Pitzer College, Claremont, California; the Peace Center for the
Performing Arts, Greenville, South Carolina; the Urban League
of the Upstate (South Carolina); and the University of Chicago
Law School. He received his B.A., cum laude, from Harvard College
and his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School.
