What we offer
The Department of Career Services provides a wide range of
career development services for Charleston School of Law students
and creates opportunities to connect students with employers
in an efficient and supportive manner. Our services include:
-
Programming
Throughout the academic year, the Charleston
School of Law conducts many career-related presentations and
panel discussions for our students. Topics include writing
resumes and cover letters, job search nuts and bolts, interviewing,
the judicial clerkship process, and overviews of substantive
legal practice areas. We welcome employers to participate
in our many programs.
-
Individual Career Counseling
The mission of the department is to help students
engage in a meaningful job search, to compete as professionals,
and to help them make well-informed choices leading to long-term
career satisfaction. The Assistant Dean and the Assistant
Director are available for individual counseling sessions
with students. The Assistant Dean and Assistant Director are
former practicing attorneys with a range of legal backgrounds
in the private and public sectors.
-
On-Campus Interviews
The department coordinates on-campus student
interviews with employers in the public and private sectors
in South Carolina and beyond. These on-campus interview programs
are concentrated in the fall for second- and third-year students
and in the spring for first-year students.
-
Resume Forwarding
The department forwards resumes, cover letters,
and other application materials to requesting employers. Employers
may choose to conduct interviews on-campus or off-campus.
-
Employer Database and Online Career Resource
Center
The department provides Charleston School
of Law students with access to a dynamic database of employers
who wish to have students contact them directly. The department
also develops and maintains online career resource tools available
on this site.
-
Pro Bono Program
The Charleston School of Law prepares students
for careers in all areas of legal practice. Regardless of
a student's path after graduation, the Charleston School of
Law strives to instill in students the value of public service.
All students must complete 30 hours of pro bono legal service
under the supervision of a licensed attorney before they graduate.
The department develops and supports pro bono opportunities
in the legal community and provides guidance to students in
their selection of pro bono work. The Assistant Dean pre-approves
all student pro bono work.
