Stephen A. Spitz
Professor of Law

Highly-respected property law expert Stephen A. Spitz teaches property law at the Charleston School of Law faculty.

"Steve Spitz is one of the most respected teachers and lawyers in South Carolina," Dean Richard Gershon said. "He is an outstanding faculty member who brings us great credibility with the practicing Bar. He is considered a leading expert in South Carolina property law."

Spitz, who has been an associate professor at the University of South Carolina School of Law, joins the Charleston faculty as a full professor. At USC, he won the Gedney M. Howe Outstanding Teaching Award.

Spitz received his bachelor's degree from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1969 and his law degree from the University of Nebraska in 1974. Prior to becoming a professor, he practiced law in Omaha, Nebraska.

In the past, Spitz also has taught courses in remedies, real estate transactions and environmental law, including a seminar on the federal Superfund law. He is former chair of the Governor's State Water Law Revision Committee.

Among his publications are a case book, "Real Estate Transactions: Cases and Materials," and a practice pamphlet, "Searching Land Titles in South Carolina." He also has written chapters in books on South Carolina water and environmental laws.
