CHARLESTON, S.C., Nov. 4, 2003 - - The new Charleston School of Law has hired an admissions director and its first full-time professor, Dean Richard Gershon formally announced today.

John S. Benfield, who has served as the assistant dean for admissions and financial aid at the University of South Carolina School of Law since 1993, is Assistant Dean for Admissions at the new Charleston School of Law.

"We're lucky to have a proven professional like John to work to recruit the South's best students to start at the Charleston School of Law next fall," Gershon said. "He's already busy doing his job and is having great success in telling the story of how the new law school will be a place where traditions bring great opportunity."

Benfield, a 1978 graduate of Wofford College, holds a master's degree in American History (1982) from the University of South Carolina. At the Charleston School of Law, he will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Office of Admissions.

Also today, Gershon announced USC Law Professor R. Randall Bridwell will join the new school's faculty next fall.

"We are honored to have Professor Bridwell to be a member of our faculty," Gershon said. "His extensive and respected work in legal history and admiralty issues will be a great benefit to our students."

Bridwell, who has been the Strom Thurmond Professor of Law at USC, holds a master's degree in law from Harvard University, a law degree from Southern Methodist University and a bachelor's degree from Midwestern University. At the Charleston School of Law, he is expected to teach contracts and develop an admiralty program.

The Charleston School of Law is a new private law school that will open in Fall 2004. The school currently is accepting applications. Online applications are free. For more information on the school, its mission and its curriculum, visit its Web site:
