Law school hires two more professors for full teaching slate
Beckman will teach family law; Eliz. McCullough will teach commercial law

APRIL 26, 2005 - - Two experienced lawyers will join the Charleston School of Law faculty in August to bring the total number of professors at the new law school to 12, Dean Richard Gershon announced today:

  • Columbia lawyer Elizabeth H. McCullough will be an associate professor who teaches commercial law.

  • Texas lawyer Sydney A. Beckman will join the school's faculty as an assistant professor to teach courses in family law.

"The Law School is indeed lucky to have Syd Beckman and Elizabeth McCullough to join its faculty," Gershon said. "Their commitment to providing the best legal instruction for our students is unsurpassed. We look forward to having them in Charleston this fall."

McCullough, who has represented a variety of commercial lenders since joining Finkel & Altman LLC in Columbia in 1985, served as co-lead counsel for the trustee in the HomeGold Inc./Carolina Investors bankruptcies, the largest bankruptcy in South Carolina history.

A graduate of the University of Virginia with a bachelor's degree in biology, McCullough graduated with honors from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1984. She also has a master's degree in biology from USC. She also is a former law clerk of Judge Robert F. Chapman of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. McCullough is married to Ralph McCullough, provost of the Charleston School of Law.

Beckman, an author of several legal books on family law, practiced law with Goodman, Clark & Beckman in Arlington, Texas, for several years during which he also served as a municipal judge pro tempore in Fort Worth and a visiting associate judge. He also has served as an adjunct professor at Texas Wesleyan University School of Law.

A graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University with a bachelor's degree in psychology, Beckman received his law degree from Baylor University School of Law in 1991. Most recently, he is co-author of Texas Family Law - Direct & Cross Examination.
