Top SC lawyer, former Delaware law dean bring major credentials

FEB. 2, 2006 - - Two distinguished lawyers have joined the Charleston School of Law as visiting professors, Dean Richard Gershon announced today.

  • Gerald M. Finkel, a leading South Carolina attorney in insurance law, joins as a distinguished visiting professor. Finkel is teaching insurance law and trial advocacy.

  • J. Kirkland Grant, the former dean of the Delaware School of Law, joins as a distinguished visiting professor who is providing instruction in business and commercial law.

"The school is fortunate to have these two business law experts providing training to our students," Gershon said. "Jerry Finkel is known far and wide in South Carolina legal circles for his experience in insurance law. And the students will get a great benefit from Professor Grant's years of scholarship and teaching in corporate law."

Finkel is the founding member of Finkel and Altman, a major South Carolina business law firm with offices in Columbia, Charleston, North Charleston and Georgetown. Finkel, who has taught trial advocacy and insurance law at the University of South Carolina, is past president of the S.C. Trial Lawyers Association and a member of the S.C. Bar's Board of Governors. He has published extensively in the areas of business law, insurance law and torts. Finkel, a member of the American Law Institute, has a bachelor's degree from New York University and a law degree from the University of South Carolina Law School.

Grant is professor emeritus at Touro Law School in Huntington, N.Y., where he was selected by students as professor of the year. He also has been the national Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity professor of the year. Previously, Grant served as dean and professor of law at Delaware Law School. He also has taught at the University of South Carolina Law School, Harvard Law School and Columbia Law School.
