Simpkins to lead law school's diversity outreach program

CHARLESTON, S.C., Aug. 9, 2006 - - Assistant Professor John L.S. Simpkins has been named director of diversity to lead the Charleston School of Law's effort to continue to attract a diverse student body.

"Our school is committed to increasing opportunities for access to education at all levels," Dean Richard Gershon said. "We're fortunate to have a South Carolina native like Professor Simpkins lead this effort."

Simpkins, who will continue to teach constitutional law and comparative constitutional law, added, "We see this as an opportunity to address issues of diversity in all of its facets so that everyone who is part of the Charleston School of Law community will feel welcomed and valued."

Gershon said the school wanted students at all levels to know that a career in law was an option.

"We are planning to do outreach at elementary schools, middle schools and high schools to tell our story," the dean said.

Before joining the law school last year Simpkins taught political science at Furman University and was associate director of the Richard W. Riley Institute at Furman University. A graduate of Harvard University with a law degree from Duke University, Simpkins is a native of Lexington, S.C.

He also is a founding director of the Center for a Better South based in Charleston.
